Have you every know anyone who always seems to feel like a ball of stress? Stress has many symptoms, and causes all types of disease! Including some that might surprise you.
True or false? Emotional stress is difficult, but thankfully, does not cause physical health problems. The answer, false. Physical disease is caused by emotional stress as much as it is by physical stress.
One of the most common results of chronic emotional stress, weight gain. Excess cortisol, “The Stress Hormone”, increases appetite, extra sugar is turned into fat and then to pounds. Another effect of chronic emotional stress, decreased cognitive performance. Chronic exposure to stress hormones can shrink the hippocampus of the brain, the brain’s center of memory. How about this effect of chronic stress? Cold hands and feet. Ouch!
Cold extremities result when the body’s fight or flight response shunts blood to the heart, lungs, and other vital organs. What else can chronic stress do? It can offset blood pressure. Chronic stress disrupts aldosterone, the hormone that regulates blood pressure. Hypo (low) or hyper (high) tension results. Chronic stress can increase the risk of stroke. Stress can cause blood to become stickier. Sticky blood increases the likelihood of clotting, and of stroke.
Attention men: chronic stress can cause abnormal prostate cell development. Usually, multiplication of prostate cancer cells is caused by male hormones, but excessive stress hormones can activate these same cancer-spreading metabolic pathways. Chronic emotional stress can even cause asthma, as stress hormones constrict bronchial tubes and increase ventilation. Stress is unavoidable, but yes, we can prevent stress from causing disease.
Let’s play Jeopardy. This is caused when stress misaligns verterbrae, thereby interfering with the spinal nerves. Hint: It is what a chiropractor looks for during your chiropractic check-up. What is, a vertebral subluxation. Subluxations prevent the body from functioning correctly, and disease results. The answer to staying healthy? One, chiropractic check-ups to remove subluxation. Two, removal or reduction of the causative stressors.
Cortisol has a chance to rebalance, and healing can begin. Do you have a friend or loved one who is constantly stressed or getting sick? Ask your chiropractor for your copy of Stress, Part 2!
